Tensions grow between Atiku, Bauchi Governor’s sons over 2027 presidency
A new political dispute has surfaced between the families of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, as their sons trade accusations over their fathers’ potential aspirations for the 2027 presidential election.
Mohammed Abubakar, a son of Atiku and a member of his campaign team, alleged that Governor Mohammed never truly supported Atiku during the 2019 and 2023 general elections.
He also suggested that the governor’s rumored presidential ambition was contributing to divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The exchange followed comments by Shamsudeen Bala Mohammed, son of the Bauchi governor, who openly criticized Atiku and declared that his father would not support him in future elections.
Shamsudeen claimed that Atiku actively undermined his father’s 2023 re-election bid by aligning with opposition forces and leveraging influential political figures in Bauchi against the governor.
“Atiku didn’t support us in 2023,” Shamsudeen said.
“Instead, he backed the APC candidate and mobilized political elites in Bauchi to oppose us.
We barely managed to secure victory.”
Responding to these remarks, Atiku’s son denied any interference in Governor Mohammed’s political affairs.
He went further to suggest that the governor may have covertly collaborated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.
“Atiku’s focus has always been national development, not personal rivalries,” Mohammed Abubakar said.
“The difficulties Governor Mohammed encountered during the last election were internal and not linked to Atiku.”
He also accused the Bauchi governor of consistently working against Atiku and the PDP’s presidential campaign in 2023, echoing similar claims made by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
According to Abubakar, Governor Mohammed’s ambitions for the presidency have weakened his role as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and disrupted party cohesion.
He urged Shamsudeen to avoid inflammatory statements and instead contribute constructively to the political dialogue.
