Family accuses Amotekun of torture in suspect’s death, demands investigation

The family of a man identified as Monday Joseph has accused the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun, of torturing him to death while in custody.

In a petition sent to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the Inspector General of Police, the family’s lawyer, Ibukun Fasanmi, alleged that Joseph died at Amotekun’s detention facility in Owo, Ondo State.

They called for a full investigation, an autopsy, and the prosecution of the officer allegedly involved in the incident.

The petition, obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday, described the actions of the officer and his team as “criminal and unconstitutional.”

It urged the state government to take swift action to prevent further unrest among the community and supporters of the deceased.

“We urge Your Excellency to investigate this matter thoroughly. Amotekun, as a state agency, is subject to the law and cannot act with impunity.

This killing must not go unpunished,” the petition read in part.

The family added that Joseph, who was the main provider for his household, deserves justice.

The petition also confirmed that Joseph’s body is currently at the Federal Medical Centre’s morgue in Owo.

In response, Amotekun Commander Adetunji Adeleye denied the torture claims.

He stated that Joseph had been arrested for cult-related activities and became ill during detention.

“He was rushed to the hospital where he unfortunately died. Nobody tortured him,” Adeleye said.
