The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withdrawn the accreditation of 574 secondary schools in Nigeria for their involvement in examination malpractice.
As a result, these schools will not be allowed to host the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which is set to begin on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
This announcement was made by the Head of WAEC’s National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, during a press briefing held at the council’s headquarters in Lagos.
According to Dangut, the names of the delisted schools have already been submitted to the Nigerian government for further action.
“This year, we have shared with them a total of 574 schools that have had their recognition withdrawn,” Dangut said. “These schools have lost their licenses as examination centres, and we will not conduct exams there.”
Despite the sanctions, WAEC confirmed that a total of 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools have registered for the upcoming examination.
