A Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has officially dissolved the 13-year marriage between Mr. Durojaye Akingbade and his wife, Mrs. Olabisi Akingbade, following allegations of persistent marital issues including emotional disconnect and denial of conjugal rights.
Presiding over the case, the court president, S.M. Akintayo, ruled that the marriage could no longer be sustained, especially since the petitioner, Mr. Akingbade, had clearly expressed his desire to end the union.
Akintayo emphasized that the court could not compel a partner to remain in an unwanted marriage and advised both parties to go their separate ways for the sake of peace.
The court also issued a restraining order against Mrs. Akingbade, preventing her from harassing or interfering in Mr. Akingbade’s private life going forward.
Mr. Akingbade, a teacher, told the court that his wife had become uncooperative and had denied him his marital rights for three years.
He claimed that she stopped cooking for him and their three children, forcing the family to rely on relatives for meals.
He added that although he had not neglected his responsibilities, his wife consistently disregarded his authority in the home.
He also revealed that he had disconnected electricity to her section of the house after she refused to move out.
In her defense, Mrs. Akingbade, also a teacher, denied most of her husband’s accusations.
She accused Mr. Akingbade of being dishonest and unfaithful, alleging that he had been heavily influenced by his peers to pursue extramarital relationships.
She further claimed that he blamed her for a sexually transmitted infection and that he had married three other women between 2020 and 2024 without her knowledge.
Additionally, she noted that her husband maintained a closer relationship with his mother than with her.
The court concluded that the relationship had irretrievably broken down and granted the dissolution of the marriage.
