An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has set July 3, 2025, for a ruling on the N5bn fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Iba Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, against Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Igboho.
The case, identified as M/1006/2024, is being heard by Justice O.T. Ademola-Salami in Court 15 at the Iyaganku Court in Ibadan.
Adams has accused Igboho of secretly recording and publishing a private phone conversation without his consent, allegedly for defamatory purposes.
He claims the action violated his constitutional right to privacy and is demanding N5bn in damages.
The plaintiff is also seeking a court declaration that secretly recording private conversations without consent is unlawful, unconstitutional, and a breach of his rights under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
At the latest hearing on Wednesday, Adams’ lawyer, Sikiru Akinrele, argued that the recording was made maliciously and without permission, urging the court to grant all the requested reliefs.
In response, Igboho’s lawyer, Junaid Sanusi, opposed the suit, stating that it lacked merit and should be dismissed. Sanusi argued that Adams did not personally sign the affidavit supporting his claims, and his representative failed to provide reasons for this omission.
He further asserted that Adams had not proven that phone tapping occurred, and therefore was not entitled to the reliefs sought.
The court has adjourned the matter until July 3 for judgment
