The Nigerian and UK nursing communities are mourning the death of Nnena Miriam, a Nigerian nurse based in Leeds, United Kingdom, whose body was recently discovered in her apartment.
According to Fellow Nurses Africa, a professional group supporting nurses across Africa, Miriam was reported missing after failing to show up for work and not responding to calls.
A friend, concerned about her absence, filed a missing person report. Police later found her unresponsive in her home.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the organization described Miriam as a committed and compassionate healthcare professional.
Her last known shift was on Sunday, and efforts to contact her afterward went unanswered.
Tragically, Miriam had only just returned to the UK from Nigeria, where she had participated in her introduction ceremony in preparation for her upcoming traditional wedding, originally scheduled for April 29.
“Her sudden death has left colleagues and loved ones overwhelmed with grief and unanswered questions,” the statement read.
Fellow nurses remembered her for her kindness, dedication, and the compassionate care she provided to patients.
As investigations into the circumstances of her death continue, the nursing community expressed solidarity with Miriam’s family and friends.
This incident follows a similar case in March 2024, when another Nigerian nurse, Chidimma Ezenyili, died after collapsing while on duty in the UK.
