Man sentenced to two years in prison for drug trafficking

A Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, has sentenced Muphy Afolabi to two years in prison for trafficking 360 grammes of cannabis sativa and eight grammes of tramadol.

Justice Nkeonye Maha delivered the judgment, convicting Afolabi based on the evidence presented by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and his guilty plea.

In her ruling, Justice Maha acknowledged the defense counsel’s request for leniency, urging the court to temper justice with mercy.

However, she warned Afolabi that if he reoffends after serving his sentence, he may face harsher consequences.

“Afolabi is sentenced to one year for each of the two counts, with the sentences to run concurrently from the date of his initial arrest,” she said.

Before the verdict, the defense counsel, Musbau Olapade, pleaded for a lighter sentence, highlighting that Afolabi’s family—his wife, two children, and elderly mother—would suffer significantly if a severe punishment were imposed.

The prosecutor, Daniel Otunla, informed the court that Afolabi committed the crime on November 1, 2024, at Sanyo, Ibadan.

He was arrested by NDLEA operatives with two bags: one containing 360 grammes of cannabis and the other concealing eight grammes of tramadol, a psychotropic substance. These offences violated Section 11(C) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation 2004.
