A new pope has been elected following several rounds of voting by cardinals at the Vatican. The traditional white smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel chimney on Thursday signaled that a decision had been reached, indicating the new pontiff secured the required two-thirds majority vote.
The conclave, which began on Wednesday, involved 133 cardinals from around the world.
It was convened after the passing of Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio), who died on Easter Monday at the age of 88.
The newly elected pope becomes the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church. More details are expected to follow.
