Five arrested for sale of two-week-old baby in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested five suspects linked to the abduction and sale of a two-week-old baby boy.

The arrests followed an investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), according to a statement released on Thursday by the police spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.

The case was initially reported on May 5, 2025, at the Ajah Police Division by a man who reported that his 16-year-old cousin, identified as Miss Happiness, had gone missing.

The teenager, who was pregnant by an unknown individual, had been placed under the care of a woman named Nonye Osi due to financial difficulties.

Police said Osi later conspired with others to relocate the girl without the family’s knowledge. When she was eventually found, the pregnancy was no longer visible, and the newborn baby was missing.

The case was transferred to the SCID, leading to the arrest of five individuals: Nonye Osi, Akintan Adedayo, Jimoh Bashiru, Elizabeth Bishop, and Bukola Oladapo. Investigators allege that the group sold the baby for N3 million.

After what authorities described as “painstaking efforts,” detectives tracked the baby to Agemuwo in Badagry, Lagos, where he was found in good health.

The Gender and Anti-Human Trafficking Unit is now overseeing the case and caring for the child until he can be reunited with his mother.

Police say investigations are ongoing to ensure all those involved are prosecuted.

The Lagos State Command reiterated its commitment to the protection and safety of all residents.

This case echoes a similar incident in 2024, when a 39-year-old man in Bauchi State was arrested for attempting to sell his five-year-old daughter for N1.5 million.
