A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Ibadan, where a candidate sitting for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) was killed by a stray bullet fired by a police officer during a pursuit.
As reported by Vanguard, the shooting took place along Gbagi Market Road as police chased a vehicle suspected to be driven by internet fraudsters, commonly referred to as “Yahoo Boys.”
During the chase, a bullet intended for the fleeing suspects struck the student, who was on a motorcycle with his twin brother en route to an examination center.
The victim was rushed to Welfare Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
In the aftermath, outraged traders and sympathisers staged a protest by bringing the student’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat, demanding justice and police accountability.
Security forces were deployed to the entrance of the secretariat to manage the growing crowd, while demonstrators called for urgent reforms in police operations.
As of the time of reporting, neither the Oyo State Police Command nor the state government had released an official statement on the incident.
