A diesel-laden tanker exploded on Tuesday near the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta, destroying several containerised shops and causing panic in the surrounding community.
The explosion occurred just behind the fence separating the sports facility from the Ijeja neighbourhood.
Witnesses reported a sudden burst of flames that sent nearby residents fleeing for safety.
According to Abiodun Owolabi of the Ogun State Fire Service, the incident happened while the tanker, with registration number LND 898 YJ, was discharging diesel into a storage facility inside the complex.
“The fire was likely triggered by the use of a petrol-powered pump during the transfer process,” Owolabi said.
The tanker driver sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
While no lives were lost, the blaze damaged several nearby shops before emergency responders brought the situation under control.
“We acted swiftly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further,” Owolabi added.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the full cause and assess damages.
