Violence erupted in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State on Sunday after youths set part of the Rano Divisional Police Station ablaze, following the death of a local motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, in police custody.
According to the Kano State Police Command, Musa had been arrested after several public complaints alleging reckless behavior and suspected drug use.
While in custody, he reportedly became weak and was taken to Rano General Hospital, where he died the next morning.
News of his death sparked outrage among local youths, who stormed the police station, looting and setting parts of it on fire.
Two vehicles were burned and 10 others vandalized in the chaos.
The police confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) sustained critical injuries during the attack and later died at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Twenty-seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the violence.
Residents allege that the situation escalated when officers opened fire on the protesters, injuring two young men, Kabiru Muhammad and Muhammad Ibrahim, who are currently receiving treatment at Rano General Hospital.
“This is a sad day for our community,” a local resident said. “We just wanted answers about Abdullahi Musa. He was not a criminal.”
Police spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna confirmed the unrest and assured the public that a full investigation would be conducted..
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, has since visited the area to assess the situation and ensure calm is restored.
Benue: Seven Dead in Cement Truck Accident
Seven people have died in a lone accident involving a truck loaded with cement along the Katsina-Ala–Zaki Biam Road in Benue State.
Eyewitnesses said the truck, carrying approximately 600 bags of cement, was speeding toward Zaki Biam when it struck a pothole, causing the driver to lose control.
The vehicle overturned, killing seven occupants and injuring several others.
Quick intervention by local residents reportedly saved six passengers who were injured, while two others escaped unharmed.
Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Steve Ayodele, confirmed the incident and said 15 people were involved in total.
He added that the wreckage had been cleared to restore traffic flow.
