The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep concern over the current state of the nation under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing it as “exploitative, insensitive, and anti-people.”

Rising from its 99th meeting held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the PDP NEC condemned the spate of insecurity, economic hardship, and alleged systemic corruption in the country.

It accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of failing to fulfill its constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property.

In a communique issued after the meeting, the party decried what it termed as the deteriorating security situation marked by rampant kidnappings, killings, and attacks on communities.

The PDP blamed what it called President Tinubu’s negligence for emboldening criminal activities across the country.

The main opposition party also took a swipe at the administration’s economic policies, stating that the removal of fuel subsidies, increased electricity tariffs, multiple taxation, and other “ill-conceived” economic decisions have crippled the productive sector, led to massive job losses, and worsened poverty and crime nationwide.

“The country is witnessing widespread misery due to the collapse of businesses and the loss of investor confidence caused by policy inconsistency, budget padding, and large-scale looting of public funds,” the party said.

The PDP NEC further alleged that the APC is plotting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state by suppressing opposition voices and institutions through intimidation and harassment.

Despite the challenges, the PDP reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles and emphasized its unity and resilience.

It declared that its 99th NEC meeting served as a strong signal of the party’s focus and cohesion ahead of future political contests.

As part of its internal preparations, the NEC ratified the composition of two key committees ahead of its national convention scheduled to hold from Thursday, August 28 to Saturday, August 30, 2025.

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri will chair the Zoning Committee, with Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal as Vice Chairman and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang as Secretary.

The National Convention Committee will be chaired by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke as Vice Chairman and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah as Secretary.

Additionally, the NEC received a resolution from the South East Zonal Executive regarding the position of National Secretary and resolved to consider the matter at its next meeting scheduled for June 30, 2025.

The acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, who presented the communique, assured Nigerians that the PDP remains steadfast and ready to “rescue the country from the stranglehold of the APC.”
