The traditional ruler of Idjerhe Kingdom in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, His Majesty King Monday Arthur Whiskey, Udurhie I, has appealed to both the Federal and Delta State governments to urgently address the rising cases of killings and kidnappings allegedly carried out by Fulani herdsmen.

In a statement signed by the Crown OtotaR’Idjerhe (Iyasere), UzziOnosia James Obriki, and made available to journalists in Warri, the monarch called for the immediate relocation of herdsmen from Idjerhe Kingdom, citing a breakdown in peaceful coexistence due to their alleged criminal activities.

“There is an urgent need to relocate all herdsmen from our kingdom as the Idjerhe people can no longer coexist with them due to their ongoing criminal activities,” King Whiskey stated.

He strongly condemned the recent attacks on local farmers and described the killings as senseless and unprovoked.

The monarch urged the Federal Government, Delta State Government, and the National Assembly to intervene by enhancing security and providing relief materials for affected communities, especially those bordering Edo State.

“The situation has created an atmosphere of fear and distrust within our community. Immediate action is needed to safeguard the lives of our farmers and residents,” the statement read.

“We urge all relevant authorities to take decisive steps to restore peace, security, and stability in Idjerhe. The livelihoods of our farmers and the well-being of our people depend on it.”

King Whiskey also cited several disturbing incidents involving Fulani herdsmen, including the abduction of a 14-year-old girl who was reportedly taken as a wife or for sexual exploitation.

He said another young girl was also forcibly taken within the kingdom.

In response to a recent killing allegedly carried out by herdsmen, the monarch directed the Crown Otota to convene a meeting with chiefs and residents of Edeje and Irhobo communities.

The meeting, held on May 6, 2025, featured eyewitness testimonies of attacks by herdsmen.

One witness recounted being assaulted with sticks and cutlasses on her way home from the farm but managed to escape when the attackers turned their attention to another man on a motorcycle.

Another woman told the gathering she had been kidnapped by herdsmen and was only released after her husband paid a ransom of N5 million.

The monarch’s appeal comes amid growing concern over insecurity in rural communities across the region.
