A spectator tragically died after falling from the stands during the Nations League final between Portugal and Spain in Munich on Sunday, UEFA confirmed.
The fan fell from the central tier into the press box below during the first period of extra time. Emergency services, including paramedics and police, quickly responded to the scene.
A UEFA spokesperson described the incident as a “medical emergency” and confirmed the fan had “sadly” passed away during the match.
Both teams expressed their condolences following the game, which Portugal won 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente offered his sympathies during the post-match press conference, saying, “I want to show my deepest condolences because a fan has died. It reminds us of what is truly important in life.”
A representative from the Portuguese team also expressed sorrow, stating the tragedy “casts a shadow on our victory today.” Portugal’s coach Roberto Martinez described the news as “extremely sad.”
The supporter is believed to have fallen approximately eight metres. The exact circumstances surrounding the fall remain unclear.
