FG orders investigation into viral video on FMC Abuja emergency unit

The federal government has launched a full investigation following a viral video showing alleged neglect of accident victims at the emergency unit of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jabi, Abuja.

The footage appeared to show staff abandoning patients brought in after accidents.

One staff member claimed the hospital lacked essential medical supplies such as latex gloves, resuscitation equipment, and patient transfer tools.

However, the government has dismissed these claims. Preliminary findings indicate that the emergency department was adequately stocked with consumables, equipment, and patient transfer devices at the time.

In response, FMC Abuja has begun engaging with staff and stakeholders to ascertain the facts behind the incident.

The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Obadiah Gana, said the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, ordered the comprehensive probe.

The findings will be made public once available.

According to the statement, the emergency unit had sufficient medical consumables, resuscitation equipment, medications, and patient transfer facilities, contrary to what was suggested in the video.

The hospital management reiterated its commitment to transparency, noting that it operates several patient feedback channels—including phone lines, QR codes, and email—to address concerns promptly.

FMC Abuja also runs a medical indigent fund to assist patients unable to afford care and has successfully treated many critical cases requiring advanced surgeries like open-heart procedures, kidney transplants, and spine surgeries.

The statement concluded with an apology for any distress caused by the video and a reassurance that the hospital values patient trust and is dedicated to delivering compassionate, high-quality healthcare.
