A high-voltage electrical surge in the Tudun-Wadan Pantami area of Gombe Metropolis has claimed the lives of five people, including a senior state official, and left 13 others injured, according to the Gombe State Police Command.
Among the deceased was Abdullahi Kulani, Permanent Secretary for Special Duties and Regional Coordination in Gombe State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, reportedly caused by a sudden surge from a nearby transformer, catching residents off guard.
Police spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed that officers from the Low-cost Divisional Headquarters responded promptly to the emergency.
He said the injured victims are currently receiving medical care at various hospitals in the state.
Gombe State Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Yahaya, described the incident as “deeply saddening” and extended condolences to the affected families.
“We express our heartfelt sympathy to those who have lost loved ones and wish the injured a swift and full recovery,” he said.
He also pledged a thorough investigation into the cause of the surge.
“We are determined to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic event and ensure accountability where necessary.”
The incident has left the Tudun-Wadan Pantami community in shock. An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, described the moment as chaotic and terrifying.
“People were shouting and running.
Some victims were already unconscious by the time help arrived. I’ve never seen anything like it,” the resident said.
