Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel following nearly two weeks of escalating hostilities between the two nations.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday evening, Trump claimed that both countries had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire,” set to take effect at midnight local time.
He said the deal includes a phased wind-down of military operations by each side.
“Congratulations to everyone!” Trump wrote. “It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a complete and total ceasefire.”
According to him, Iran would initiate the ceasefire, followed by Israel twelve hours later.
He added that by the 24th hour, the international community would officially mark the end of what he called “the 12-day war.”
Trump praised both nations for what he described as “the stamina, courage, and intelligence to end what could have destroyed the Middle East.”
He continued, “This is a war that could have gone on for years… but it didn’t, and never will!”
However, Iranian officials offered a more reserved response.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, said there was no formal agreement in place as of yet.
“There is NO ‘agreement’ on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations,” Araghchi stated.
He added that Iran’s retaliatory strikes against Israel had continued until 4:00 a.m. local time but indicated a willingness to halt further action if Israel ceases its own attacks.
“Provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4:00 a.m.
Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards,” he said.
Despite Trump’s optimism, neither Iran nor Israel has officially confirmed the existence of a mutually agreed ceasefire.
The international community remains on alert, watching for concrete signs of de-escalation in the volatile region.
