Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have arrested a man, Philip Jallo, over the tragic death of a three-year-old boy who drowned in an open septic tank in Durumi 2, Abuja. The incident happened around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2025, while the child was playing within the compound and accidentally fell into the exposed soakaway filled with waste.According to FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, preliminary findings revealed that the tank had long been a safety risk. Despite repeated warnings and pleas from neighbors, the suspect allegedly failed to cover it.“The open septic tank had been a known hazard in the area, and the suspect was repeatedly urged to take action, which he ignored,” Adeh stated. The boy was eventually pulled out of the tank and rushed to the hospital, but doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.Jallo is currently in police custody while investigations continue.Reacting to the incident, the FCT Commissioner of Police expressed deep sorrow and offered condolences to the bereaved family. He also emphasized the importance of environmental safety, urging residents to promptly fix potential dangers in their surroundings. He further advised parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children to prevent similar tragedies. The FCT Police Command reiterated its commitment to holding individuals accountable for negligence that puts public safety at risk.
