A National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officer, identified simply as Jide, was shot and killed on Tuesday by suspected drug dealers during a raid in the Ita’nla area of Ondo town, Ondo State.
The attack occurred as NDLEA operatives stormed a residential building based on intelligence reports that illicit drugs were hidden in the ceiling of the apartment.
While some officers entered the premises to conduct a search, Jide, who was positioned outside on surveillance duty, was ambushed and shot in the neck by armed assailants.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, said police reinforcements were promptly deployed to the scene following the fatal shooting.
Ayanlade revealed that four suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident, and a single-barrel firearm was recovered during the operation.
“The command is working closely with the NDLEA to thoroughly investigate the case and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice,” Ayanlade said. “This is a grave and unacceptable crime, and we will pursue it with the seriousness it deserves.”
Authorities have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend any additional suspects and dismantle the drug network operating in the area.
