The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with the vandalism and theft of solar-powered street lights across parts of the state.
According to the police, the suspects were caught in possession of stolen solar panels and iron-cutting tools, and are currently assisting investigators in tracking down those who may have purchased the stolen items.
Speaking on the arrests, the State Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, condemned the increasing cases of infrastructure sabotage, particularly along the Elebele-AIT Road and other areas in Yenagoa. He confirmed that the suspects would be charged to court soon.
“Vandalism is sabotage,” Idu said. “We have observed that certain criminal elements are deliberately targeting solar lighting infrastructure that has supported nightlife and public safety in the state.
We are actively monitoring and arresting those involved.”
The commissioner emphasized that public infrastructure must be protected, noting that such assets are vital investments for the benefit of all citizens.
To bolster security efforts, Idu revealed that the state government has supported the command with a high-powered, long-range surveillance drone capable of operating both day and night.
In a related remark, the police commissioner addressed the ongoing debate about parading suspects.
While condemning any form of dehumanization, he advocated for the public presentation of suspects caught with clear evidence as a deterrent to others.
“We are against any inhumane treatment, but we believe that suspects found with incriminating evidence should be presented to the public to discourage others from engaging in similar crimes,” he said.
