The University of Port Harcourt has dismissed as false reports circulating on social media about the alleged discovery and killing of a large snake described as a deity on its campus.
The rumour, which gained traction on Tuesday through a viral post and accompanying voice note, claimed the reptile was found in one of the university’s hostels and classrooms, sparking panic among students and the public.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the institution’s spokesperson, Dr. Sammy Kpenu, described the report as baseless and the product of mischief-makers seeking attention online.
“For the avoidance of doubt, no snake was seen, no snake was killed, and no such incident occurred anywhere on the university campus,” the statement read.
Dr. Kpenu urged students, parents, and stakeholders to disregard the report, adding that the university remains a safe and secure environment for learning.
He further condemned those behind the claim for attempting to damage the university’s reputation in a bid for “cheap popularity and online followership.”
The management said it has taken steps to monitor and report individuals spreading the misinformation to the appropriate authorities, and urged the public to rely solely on official communication channels for accurate updates.
