Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s inability to provide effective leadership and meaningful governance.
In a letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Ward 1 Chairman in Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Melaye stated that his decision was prompted by a loss of confidence in the party’s direction.
“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement,” the letter read in part.
According to the former lawmaker, the PDP has failed to demonstrate the capacity to rescue Nigerians from what he described as the “prevailing political cankerworms” undermining the nation’s progress.
Melaye, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2023 Kogi State election, said the decision followed “careful reflection” on the state of the party and its future.
“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the party or lend my support to her agenda,” he wrote.
He further requested that his resignation be considered a complete withdrawal from all levels and structures of the party.
“In view of the above, please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” he added.
Melaye concluded the letter by expressing appreciation for the opportunity to have served on the party’s platform during his membership.
As of press time, the PDP has yet to issue an official response to Melaye’s resignation.
