A Sharia court sitting in Kano on Friday sentenced a 35-year-old man, Sabiu Abdullahi, to 50 strokes of the cane after he was found guilty of stealing five pieces of roofing sheets.
The defendant, a resident of Mariri Quarters in Kano, was charged with criminal trespass and theft offences punishable under Sections 134 and 287 of the Kano State Penal Code Law.
Abdullahi pleaded guilty to the charges.
Prosecution counsel, Zahradeen Abubakar, told the court that the case was reported on July 21 by one Anas Yakubu of Tamburawa Quarters.
According to the prosecutor, the defendant unlawfully entered Yakubu’s residence while he was away and stole the roofing materials.
Presiding judge, Umar Lawal, convicted the defendant on the strength of his own plea and ordered that he be flogged 50 times as prescribed by law.
The sentence was carried out in accordance with the provisions of Sharia law practiced in parts of northern Nigeria.
