Panic gripped a healthcare centre in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on Monday following the mysterious disappearance of a newborn baby, prompting the arrest of four suspects by the state police command.
The incident reportedly occurred less than 24 hours after the child was delivered on Sunday evening.
Chaos broke out at the facility on Monday morning when nurses on duty could not locate the baby during routine checks.
“It was when the nurses attempted to attend to the baby that they discovered it was missing,” a source at the facility told our correspondent.
The development caused widespread confusion, drawing attention from hospital staff, the baby’s mother, and traders at a nearby market, many of whom gathered at the scene in disbelief.
Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sunday Abutu, said the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, had ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the matter.
“The Commissioner has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case and ensure the safe recovery of the child,” Abutu stated.
He added that four individuals had been arrested in connection with the disappearance and were currently assisting investigators with useful information.
