A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has ordered the remand of a 25 year old woman, Odunayo Odunlade, at the Agodi Correctional Centre for allegedly stealing a two month old baby.

The accused, who was arraigned on a one count charge of child theft, pleaded not guilty before the court.

Presiding Magistrate O O Latunji granted bail in the sum of five hundred thousand naira, with two reliable sureties in the same amount.

However, the defendant was unable to meet the bail conditions and was remanded in custody.

The case was adjourned until October 21 for trial.

During the proceedings, the prosecuting counsel, Inspector Oluseye Akinola, informed the court that the alleged offence occurred on July 24 at the Lascap Oniyanrin area of Ibadan.

According to Inspector Akinola, the defendant unlawfully took the infant from a bedroom where the child had been left by his mother.

He added that officers from Mokola Police Station promptly launched an investigation after receiving a report of the incident.

The police were able to trace and apprehend the suspect at an undisclosed location several days after the incident, Akinola said.

The charge, he noted, is in violation of Section 390 subsection 9 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Volume two, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
