The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of two staff members of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), by suspected kidnappers on Monday evening.
The victims were reportedly abducted from their residence in Akungba Akoko, located in Akoko South West Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Akure, said one of the victims has been rescued.
“Yes, two AAUA staff members were abducted by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers.
However, our officers responded swiftly and were able to rescue one of them,” he said.
He added that the Commissioner of Police has directed that the rescued staff member be debriefed to provide possible intelligence that could aid in the rescue of the remaining victim.
One of the abducted staff members, Mr Omoniyi Eleyinmi, is a faculty officer in the Faculty of Education and a member of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).
According to reports, Eleyinmi was taken around 7 p.m. on Monday from his residence along Supare Akoko Road in Akungba Akoko.
Police efforts to secure the release of the second victim are ongoing.
