Vehicular movement around the Murtala Muhammed Airport was brought to a standstill on Monday as hundreds of physically challenged persons blocked major access roads in protest over the closure of a government-run school for people with disabilities.
The demonstrators, carrying banners of the Farmcraft Centre for the Blind, caused heavy traffic gridlock, forcing passengers and airport staff to trek long distances.
Many travellers feared missing their flights as the disruption stretched into the day.
Protest leaders said the action aimed to draw President Bola Tinubu’s attention to the plight of disabled students whose education has been stalled for nearly two years following the school’s shutdown.
They claimed over 500 protesters joined the demonstration, with more arriving from across Lagos.
“This school gave us dignity,” said protest leader Mr. Dolor. “Now it has been shut for almost two years without reason, despite our letters and visits to both state and federal authorities.
This protest will ensure our message reaches the President.”
The school, located in Isheri with branches across Lagos, has reportedly been closed despite repeated appeals for its reopening.
Protesters vowed to remain at the airport until they receive a firm government commitment.
In a travel advisory, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the protest and warned passengers of severe traffic congestion. “We advise travellers to use alternative routes and confirm flight schedules with airlines,” FAAN spokesperson Obiageli Orah said, apologising for the inconvenience.
