A Nigerian national, Segun Ogundipe, 33, has been sentenced to five years in prison in the United Kingdom for raping and sexually assaulting a woman in Gloucester.
Ogundipe, of Tuffley Lane, Gloucester, was found guilty by a jury of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and assault by penetration, despite denying the charges.
His conviction at Gloucester Crown Court comes days after another Nigerian, Elvis Nosakhare, was jailed for six years for sexually assaulting his girlfriend’s underage daughter.
According to Gloucestershire Police, the offences occurred in 2022 after Ogundipe met the victim at her workplace and invited her for drinks.
During the evening, he made unwanted sexual advances and later drove her to his home under the pretext of retrieving an item. There, he sexually assaulted and raped her.
Even as he drove her to Cheltenham afterwards, he continued touching her despite her protests.
Police on routine patrol later stopped his car, giving the victim an opportunity to escape. She initially hesitated to speak out but later disclosed the assault after an officer noticed her distress.
Ogundipe claimed in court that the encounter was consensual, but the jury rejected his account.
Judge Lowe, while noting positive character references, ruled that the gravity of the offence warranted a custodial sentence.
Ogundipe will also face deportation after serving his term.
In a statement read in court, the survivor described the trauma she endured, saying the attack made her question her self-worth and forced her to quit her job.
She urged other survivors to speak out, assuring them they would be believed and supported.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Jon Furse praised the victim’s courage, stressing the police’s commitment to bringing sexual offenders to justice.
