Two students of Niger Delta University, Amassoma, lost their lives on Wednesday in a fatal head-on collision between a truck and a commercial tricycle along the Yenagoa–Amassoma Road, Bayelsa State.
Several other passengers sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to a nearby morgue.
Witnesses said the crash occurred at a sharp bend when the truck, reportedly speeding, lost control and rammed into the tricycle. Residents blamed the accident on reckless driving and the absence of road signs.
“The tricycle had no chance of escaping because the tipper was already too close,” said a trader, Godspower Okilo. “We’ve been complaining about reckless truck drivers for years, but nothing changes.”
Amassoma Road, described by locals as one of the most dangerous in the state, has seen frequent accidents due to multiple bends created during reconstruction.
Residents renewed calls for stricter enforcement of speed limits, installation of speed breakers, and more safety checks on heavy-duty vehicles.
Bayelsa police spokesman, DSP Musa Muhammad, confirmed the incident, saying investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash.
