Presidency mocks Atiku, Obi as APC sweeps bye-elections

The Presidency on Monday mocked opposition figures Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi after the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a sweeping victory in the weekend’s bye-elections.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, in a post on his X handle, shared a photo of the two former presidential candidates with other opposition figures and wrote: “How is the market now?” The remark, though not naming them directly, was widely seen as aimed at the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party following their poor outing at the polls.

The bye-elections were conducted to fill vacancies created by the death or resignation of lawmakers elected in the 2023 general elections.

Out of the 16 seats contested across 12 states in August, the APC clinched 12, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) won one seat each.

The PDP managed a single win, while the result in Zamfara was declared inconclusive.

The APC’s dominant performance has further cemented its control of the National Assembly and heightened political tensions ahead of future contests.
