The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has placed an indefinite ban on the popular “signing out” ceremony traditionally held by graduating students after their final examinations.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Thursday in Awka by the university’s Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke. She said the ban takes immediate effect.
According to Okeke, the management resolved to suspend the practice due to recurring incidents of violence, disorder, and disruption of academic activities linked to the celebrations.
She expressed concern over the infiltration of unauthorised persons during the events, which she noted often escalated into security threats for both students and staff.
“The ‘signing out’ activities have degenerated into unruly gatherings, sometimes resulting in damage to property and threats to safety.
Any student caught engaging in the act will face strict disciplinary measures, including possible rustication,” the statement read.
The university also cautioned outsiders against entering the campus to participate in or promote the banned activity, warning that offenders risk arrest and prosecution for breach of peace.
Reaffirming the institution’s commitment to safety and academic excellence, Okeke urged students to remain focused on their studies and report any misconduct to the appropriate authorities.
