Six passengers were injured on Tuesday morning when a Kaduna-bound train derailed along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor.
The incident occurred around 11:09 a.m. at KM 49, between Kubwa and Asham stations, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji. No fatalities were recorded.
According to the Bureau, a response team has been deployed to the accident site to gather evidence, engage stakeholders, and commence a full investigation into the cause of the derailment.
“The Bureau sympathises with those injured and extends its support to all passengers affected,” the statement read. “The investigation will focus on identifying the direct and underlying factors that led to the derailment, with the aim of issuing safety recommendations to prevent a recurrence.”
Director-General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh, also expressed sympathy to the victims, assuring Nigerians of a thorough and transparent probe.
“We deeply sympathise with all who sustained injuries.
Investigators are on site to uncover the root cause of this derailment. Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians,” he said.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers scrambling out of the cabins after the train suddenly went off the tracks. Panic spread as many fled the area, though emergency responders quickly arrived.
The NSIB said updates on the investigation would be provided as findings emerge.
