A police inspector attached to the Woji Division in Rivers State was on Sunday assaulted and robbed by more than 20 youths in the Nkpolu community.
The state police command confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, signed by its spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko.
According to the statement, Inspector Joshua Nyian was returning from duty around 10:20 a.m. when he stopped at Nkpolu to visit his pregnant girlfriend.
He was allegedly confronted by the community youth president, the local chairman, and about 20 other youths.
“They assaulted him by beating him, dragged him to the main road, seized his police identity card and phone, recorded him on video, and forcefully collected the sum of ₦78,000 from him,” the police spokesperson said.
The inspector further alleged that the youth leader had previously tried to woo his girlfriend, which may have led to the attack.
Iringe-Koko said investigations had commenced and urged the youth president and others implicated in the assault to come forward and make statements.
