The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Ebuka Adindu, for allegedly stabbing Sodiq Ibrahim to death during a violent fight in the Mandillas area of Ebute Meta, Lagos, on Wednesday.
The incident, which first gained public attention through a post by a social media user on X sparked panic after claims surfaced that street urchins were attacking innocent passersby.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, however, dismissed the reports, insisting that no miscreants had taken over the area.
He said officers from Lion Building and Ebute-Ero divisions were promptly deployed to the scene and restored calm.
Hundeyin further clarified that the clash was not a tribal conflict, contrary to speculation.
He explained that Adindu, from Abia State, fatally stabbed Ibrahim, from Kogi State, during the confrontation, after which he also stabbed himself in the shoulder and lost consciousness.
“The suspect is under arrest and receiving treatment in the hospital. He will be prosecuted once discharged,” Hundeyin said.
The police stressed that no other casualties were recorded and no properties in the Balogun Market were destroyed.
Hundeyin urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that normalcy had returned to the area.
Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh called on Lagosians to remain law-abiding and avoid spreading false information capable of creating unnecessary fear, adding that Lagos remains generally peaceful.
