‘It’s mockery of democracy’ – Obi slams Rivers LG election

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the conduct of the recently concluded local government elections in Rivers State, describing the exercise as a disgrace to democratic values.

In a post on his official X handle on Sunday, Obi said the process amounted to “rascality taken too far” and posed a double tragedy for Nigeria’s democratic system.

He argued that any election organised by a Sole Administrator illegally installed in office could not be considered legitimate, insisting it was a desecration of democracy.

“The truth remains unshaken: illegality can never give birth to legitimacy.

Any structure erected on a foundation of lawlessness is a danger to both the state and the people,” the former Anambra State governor wrote.

Obi further described the process as unconstitutional, legally baseless, and morally wrong, warning that it sent a dangerous message that the rule of law could be discarded at will by those in power.

“Nigeria cannot afford to continue on this perilous path. We cannot pretend to practise democracy while silencing the will of the people – especially at the grassroots, where democracy matters most,” he added.
