A traditional ruler in Kogi State, His Royal Highness David Wada, has been abducted by gunmen while returning from a traditional council meeting on Monday evening.
The second-class monarch, who serves as the District Head of Bagaji Odo in Omala Local Government Area, was attacked at Ojuwo Ugweche, a location residents describe as a notorious hotspot for kidnappings.
Eyewitnesses said the ruler, who was travelling on a motorcycle, was ambushed by armed men who ordered him into the forest, while the rider narrowly escaped.
Residents expressed shock over the incident, lamenting the absence of security operatives in the area despite its history of violent crimes. “That spot has always been dangerous. Normally, security teams or vigilantes patrol it, but that evening, there was no one,” a source said.
The paramount ruler of Omala, His Royal Highness Boniface Musa, confirmed the abduction and appealed for urgent government action. “Yes, the District Head of Bagaji Odo has been taken.
“We are pleading with security agencies to act swiftly and ensure his safe return,” he said.
Police spokesman in the state, SP Williams Aya, said joint security teams, hunters, and vigilantes have begun combing the forests in search of the monarch.
“We are fully mobilised and making every effort to rescue him alive,” he assured.
The incident comes amid a worsening security crisis in Omala, where armed bandits and suspected herders have carried out repeated attacks on communities, leaving many displaced.
As of press time, the kidnappers had yet to establish contact with the ruler’s family or make any ransom demands.
