Panic spread through Ajipowo community in Akure, Ondo State, on Thursday after a commercial motorcyclist, Tunde Ilesanmi, popularly known as “Dudu,” was beaten to death by a mob.
Eyewitnesses alleged that Ilesanmi, a middle-aged rider, was linked to an overnight robbery carried out by three men, two of whom reportedly escaped. Residents claimed he was part of the gang and descended on him in anger, killing him on the spot.
The situation took a dramatic turn when his relatives arrived, insisting he was innocent and a well-known rider in the area. Their claims sparked outrage among fellow motorcyclists, who quickly mobilised in protest.
Hundreds of riders blocked major roads in Akure, demanding justice for their slain colleague.
The demonstration forced residents indoors, leaving the streets deserted for hours.
Security operatives eventually dispersed the protesters and restored order. Ilesanmi’s body was evacuated as calm gradually returned to the community.
