A three-storey building under construction collapsed on Friday night at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos State, trapping several people under the rubble.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in a statement on Saturday via its official X handle, said the incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. Emergency responders rescued four adult males who were taken to hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses gave conflicting accounts of the number of people trapped, with some reporting six and others five.

NEMA noted that the exact figure remains unconfirmed, but rescue operations are ongoing.

Teams from NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other first responders swiftly mobilised to the scene, cordoning off the area to ensure safety while search efforts continued through the night.

Building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often blamed on poor construction standards, substandard materials, and weak regulatory oversight.

Data from the state government and civic groups show that dozens of such incidents occur annually, leaving casualties and displaced residents in their wake.

Authorities have repeatedly cautioned developers against unsafe practices, sealing off several non-compliant buildings in the past.
