The Bauchi State Police Command has sealed Hamdala Special Medicine Store in the Yelwa area of Bauchi metropolis after a teenage girl reportedly suffered severe injuries from treatment administered by an unqualified operator.
Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Friday.
He said the action followed a petition from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management against the store’s owner, identified as 27-year-old Ibrahim Hassan Mamman, also known as “Degree.”
According to Wakil, 15-year-old Maryam Magaji was taken to the shop for malaria treatment and received injections that caused significant harm.
She was later admitted to Bayara Hospital, where doctors traced her injuries to the medication.
“The suspect voluntarily confessed during interrogation. He narrated that on July 1, 2025, the victim’s brother insisted on injections despite his initial prescription of tablets.
He then administered an 80mg intramuscular injection for three days. Two weeks later, her condition worsened,” Wakil explained.
Investigations revealed Mamman is neither a licensed pharmacist nor a medical doctor.
Expired drugs, including Tuxil suspensions manufactured by Fidson Healthcare Plc and Tuyil Pharmaceuticals Ltd., were also recovered from the shop.
The incident comes amid repeated crackdowns on unregulated pharmaceutical outlets in Bauchi.
The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) had sealed 469 illegal drug stores in the state in 2022 and shut down 571 more in 2024 for violations ranging from lack of registration to unauthorized clinical practices.
In a separate case, the police also arrested one Zuwaira Hassan in Toro Local Government Area for allegedly torturing her 10-year-old stepdaughter.
The woman was accused of inserting a hot metal spoon into the girl’s private part after branding her a witch, allegedly under the influence of a native doctor.
Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, directed that both cases be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, assuring that justice would be served.
