The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted multiple consignments of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, cannabis, and opioids in nationwide raids, including at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi said in a statement on Sunday that two returnees from Brazil excreted 116 wraps of illicit drugs after observation in custody, while other traffickers attempted to conceal narcotics in underwear, food items, and even phone chargers.
One suspect, 46-year-old Ofoma Sunday, was arrested on arrival from Brazil on September 16 after a body scan revealed drug ingestion. He later excreted 111 wraps of heroin weighing 1.45 kg.
A follow-up operation led to the arrest of 55-year-old Nweke Jude Chukwudi at a hotel in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.
Another returnee, Ukachukwu Frank Ikechukwu, was caught at the Lagos airport with cocaine concealed internally.
In a separate incident, 38-year-old businesswoman Okolonkwo Ebere Theresa was arrested on September 14 while attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight with 1.40 kg of methamphetamine hidden in her underwear.
Further seizures included 2.30 kg of methamphetamine disguised as food items bound for Hong Kong, 257 grams of cocaine hidden inside phone chargers headed for New Zealand, and 233,800 pills of tramadol recovered in Adamawa State.
Operatives also intercepted 109 bags of cannabis weighing more than a tonne in Zamfara, destroyed over four hectares of cannabis farms in Edo, and seized large quantities of opioids in Yobe and Taraba. Several suspects were arrested in connection with the operations.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended officers across Lagos, Adamawa, Zamfara, Edo, Taraba, and Yobe, describing the operations as a significant blow to drug trafficking networks.
The agency also reiterated its commitment to public sensitisation under the War Against Drug Abuse initiative, with ongoing outreach programmes in schools, religious centres, and workplaces nationwide.
