The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Anumudu, who allegedly murdered and beheaded a 69-year-old woman, Mrs. Obianuju Akubi, in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area.
The suspect, who had been on the run since July 22, 2024, was apprehended by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, following credible intelligence.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the arrest took place in Aguleri after months of intensive manhunt.
“Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and provided useful information that led to the identification of other gang members involved in the killing and beheading of the victim,” Ikenga said.
He added that the suspect also revealed the location of the victim’s severed head, which had been taken away after the crime.
Ikenga assured that efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing members of the gang and ensure they face the full weight of the law.
“The Commissioner of Police has ordered that the remaining suspects be apprehended and brought to justice.
Further updates on the investigation will be communicated in due course,” the statement read.
