Tragedy struck in Sagamu, Ogun State, on Thursday morning when a pregnant woman lost her life and four others sustained serious injuries after a payloader rammed into a tricycle and a car along Akarigbo Road in the Sagamu Local Government Area.

The accident, which occurred around 9:00 a.m., involved an unregistered payloader, a Toyota Camry with registration number AAB 248 MK, and a commercial tricycle marked JGB 643 VD.

According to eyewitnesses, the heavy-duty vehicle lost control, veered off its lane, and crashed into the tricycle and the car.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the pregnant woman, who was a passenger in the tricycle, died on the spot, while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“Five people were involved — four male adults and one female adult. The female passenger, who was pregnant, died in the crash,” Akinbiyi said.

He explained that the payloader operator suffered minor bruises, while the driver of the Toyota Camry sustained serious injuries.

“Based on eyewitness accounts, the payloader lost control and swerved from the outbound Sabo lane into the inbound Sabo lane, ramming into both the tricycle and the Camry.

The crash led to the death of the pregnant woman and caused severe injuries to the other occupants,” he added.

The TRACE spokesperson said the woman’s body had been deposited in a morgue, while the injured victims were rushed by bystanders to different hospitals in Sagamu for treatment.

Authorities have since commenced an investigation into the cause of the accident.
