Six persons have lost their lives, while 14 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal motor accident that occurred on Saturday morning along the Nkalagu axis of the Abakaliki–Enugu Expressway in Ebonyi State.
The crash, which happened near the Nkalagu Flyover Bridge around 9:30 a.m., caused gridlock on the busy highway as emergency responders and sympathizers rushed to the scene.
Confirming the incident, the State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Henry Igwe, said a total of 22 people were involved in the accident.
He attributed the cause to dangerous overtaking involving a commercial Toyota bus and a truck.
Igwe disclosed that some of the injured victims were immediately evacuated to a hospital in Enugu by FRSC personnel and Red Cross officials, while others were taken to the General Hospital, Ezzamgbo, for emergency treatment.
The FRSC commander cautioned motorists against reckless driving and excessive speeding, urging them to exercise patience and obey traffic rules, especially during peak travel periods, to prevent further tragedies on the highways.
