Gunmen on Friday evening attacked a police station in Zonkwa, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing two officers in the process.
The attack, which occurred near Kamyim Hotel in the Kurmin-Bi area of Zonkwa, reportedly threw residents into panic as the assailants opened fire indiscriminately.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen stormed the station in a bid to free some suspected vandals earlier arrested in Kachia town, believing they were being held at the Zonkwa divisional headquarters.
One of the witnesses said, “They thought the suspects were detained at the Zonkwa station, but it turned out they were not. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done.”
A security source confirmed the incident but declined to provide further details.
A video circulating online showed two police officers lying lifeless in uniform, while residents gathered at the scene, discussing the attack.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the rising wave of insecurity in the state and across the country.
Normalcy was said to have been restored to the area after the attack, though the Kaduna State Police Command was yet to issue an official statement as of the time of filing this report.
