The Imo State Police Command has arrested three of its personnel allegedly linked to the Vikings confraternity after a viral video surfaced showing them wearing the group’s insignia.
The officers, Inspector Obinna Peter, Corporal Amaechi Augustine, and Corporal Ejikeme Victor, are currently in custody and will face an orderly room trial at the command headquarters on Monday.
Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday, noting that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, ordered a swift investigation into what he described as “an unacceptable display of unprofessionalism.”
“The conduct displayed in the viral video is highly unprofessional and does not reflect the discipline, ethics, and values of the Nigeria Police Force,” Okoye said. “The outcome of the orderly room trial will be communicated to the public in due course.”
The viral clip, first shared by anti-cultism advocacy group NaijaConfra, drew widespread outrage online.
The group condemned the officers’ actions, accusing them of openly identifying with the Vikings confraternity, also known as the Denmark International (DNKI), a cult group linked to several violent clashes across Nigeria.
“These are police officers in Owerri, Imo State, openly disgracing the Nigerian Police Force by engaging in cult activities,” the platform said. “How can such officers arrest cultists when they are members themselves?”
Reacting to the development, the Imo State Government said it would await the outcome of the police investigation before taking further action.
Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hope Uzodinma, Oguwike Nwachukwu, told Sunday PUNCH that the state would act based on the findings of the probe.
“The police have said they are launching an investigation into they allegations; why don’t we wait until the outcome?” he said. “Launching an investigation is something that ought to be commended. Let’s wait for the result, and the government can take it from there.”
