The Lagos State Police Command has denied reports that its officers arrested Mr. Declan Ihekaire, who staged a lone “Free Nnamdi Kanu” protest at Iyana Ipaja.
In a statement posted on its official X handle, @LagosPoliceNG, on Monday, the command clarified that Ihekaire was not detained, contrary to claims by some online media outlets.
According to the police, officers only fired teargas to disperse miscreants and hoodlums who attempted to hijack the peaceful demonstration and cause unrest in the area.
The statement noted that Ihekaire was simply cautioned on the need to conduct himself within the law and to avoid actions that could incite violence or breach public peace.
“He was later allowed to go,” the police confirmed.
The command added that the operation, which was led by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, was part of a statewide exercise to enhance public confidence and assure residents of their safety.
It further stated that Lagos remains calm and urged residents to go about their lawful activities without fear.
