The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has condemned the armed robbery attack on some of its students by suspected criminals at a private hostel in the Ile-Ife metropolis.

In a statement on Tuesday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, described the incident as “unfortunate and unacceptable,” stressing that the institution would not tolerate any threat to the safety of its students.

According to Olarewaju, the attack occurred on Monday, October 20, 2025, when armed men stormed Oreoluwa Hostel, located within Moremi Estate, between 10:35 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

He said the robbers dispossessed students of their valuables and injured three of them during the operation.

The prompt intervention of the Students’ Union officials, who immediately rushed the injured to the University Health and Medical Centre, was commended by the management.

“At the Health Centre, three students—Ogedengbe Emmanuel Oluwafemi and Emmanuel Akinribiye, both Part Four students of the Department of Management and Accounting, and Olalekan David Okemiga, a final-year student of the Department of Mathematics—received treatment for machete wounds,” Olarewaju said.

He added that while Okemiga was beaten with a machete, he did not sustain any serious cuts.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, condemned the attack and praised the swift response of officers from the A Division, Ile-Ife, and Oke-Otubu Division, Modakeke.

Bamire called on security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to intensify patrols around student residential areas to forestall future occurrences.

He also appealed to stakeholders and philanthropists to support the university’s efforts in constructing additional hostels on campus to enhance student safety and monitoring.

“We wish the injured students a speedy recovery and thank God for sparing their lives,” Bamire added.

The Osun State Police Command has since confirmed the incident. Its spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said efforts were underway to track down and arrest the perpetrators.
