Hisbah board cancels viral TikTok couple’s wedding after public outcry

The Kano State Hisbah Board has cancelled the widely publicised wedding between popular TikTok personalities Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira ‘Yar Guda, describing the arrangement as “deceptive” following widespread criticism from the public.

Confirming the development, the Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah, Dr Mujahedeen Aminuddeen, said the decision was taken after an investigation revealed that the pair were not genuinely interested in marriage.

According to him, findings indicated that the duo had planned to use the proposed wedding to evade possible legal consequences arising from previous charges of misconduct.

“After careful scrutiny, we discovered that their relationship lacked sincerity and was only a ploy to avoid the law,” Aminuddeen stated. “The board therefore decided to cancel the wedding to prevent further controversy.”

He noted that although both individuals had completed medical screening as part of the wedding formalities, the process was halted after inconsistencies were detected.

Aminuddeen added that the case could return to court if it is not amicably resolved.

The controversy began after a Kano Magistrate Court arraigned the two TikTokers for “immoral conduct” following the circulation of a viral social-media video.

During the hearing, the defendants declared that they were in love and wished to marry, prompting Magistrate Halima Wali to refer the matter to Hisbah for marriage formalisation under Islamic law.

The court granted a 60-day period for the union to be concluded and directed the Hisbah Board to report back if the marriage failed to take place.

However, the decision sparked nationwide outrage, with many Nigerians accusing the judiciary of supporting a forced marriage.

Reacting to the criticism, the Kano State Judiciary denied the claim, describing it as a misrepresentation of the court’s proceedings.

Judiciary spokesperson Baba Jibo clarified that the court merely suspended its ruling to allow the couple to demonstrate their sincerity, not to compel them into marriage.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the court never ordered a forced marriage,” Jibo said. “It only allowed both parties to substantiate their claim of being lovers intending to marry. The records are available for verification.”

Jibo further disclosed that during the proceedings, Basira ‘Yar Guda told the court she would only agree to the marriage if Idris secured his own residence rather than a rented apartment.

The court, he said, respected their positions and granted them time to proceed under Hisbah’s supervision.

With the Hisbah Board’s latest decision, the once-celebrated TikTok romance that captivated social-media audiences has come to an abrupt end.
