he Akwa Ibom State Government has suspended the Village Head of Ikot Umo Essien in Essien Udim Local Government Area, Chief Monday Esu, over alleged involvement in acts of terrorism and activities capable of breaching public peace.
The suspension, which will last for six months, was announced in a statement on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Frank Archibong.
Archibong said the action was taken to allow for a thorough investigation into multiple allegations levelled against the traditional ruler.
According to him, the village head is accused of sponsoring vandalism and theft of public facilities at the Ikot Ekpenyong community market, as well as other offences deemed inimical to the peace and security of the area.
He disclosed that the vandalised structures included newly built blocks of shops constructed as a constituency project facilitated by the immediate past member representing Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency, Mr. Nsikak Ekong, in February 2024.
“The alleged criminal elements went further to destroy the Fadama-sponsored borehole and VIP lavatory within the same vicinity, carting away items such as aluminium roofing sheets, windows, doors, overhead tanks, water pump, and a generator,” the statement read.
The commissioner stressed that the government would not tolerate any traditional ruler engaging in or aiding criminal acts, warning that such behaviour undermines the state’s peace and development efforts.
He assured residents that the state government remains committed to maintaining law and order while protecting community projects from acts of sabotage.
